Trio San “Yozakura” from Hibiki (Jazzdor)

The debut CD by Trio San, featuring pianist/composer Satoko Fujii, vibraphonist/composer Taiko Saito, and drummer/composer Yuko Oshima. The three had never worked together as a trio, but quickly found that they inspired one another to discover new sounds and musical forms. Hibiki, recorded near the end of a short European tour, finds them immersed deeply in their own private musical world, a world full of delicate beauty, thunderous energy, and sudden surprises.

Live from the Grand River Jazz Society, The KW Jazz Room. What began as a first invitation to play at the well-respected Jazz Room in Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario leaped well beyond the expected solid night of summer ending jump and joy. The trio with Paul Novotny bass and Mark Kelso drums came with a mission: play with fire and passion. Both were accomplished.

Shai Jaschek “First Fall” from First Fall (Self Released) 

New York City– based guitarist and composer Shai Jaschek’s debut album. A combination of striking melodies and innovative arrangements of classic jazz standards, this album sets Shai apart as a promising up and coming artist on the New York jazz scene. Jaschek’s trio, consisting of Benjamin Young (bass) and Willis Edmundson (drums), plays as a strong unit and their deep musical connection is felt through the album. The trio place spontaneity and collective improvisation at the forefront of the music.

Madre Vaca “Holy Grail” from Knights of the Round Table (Madre Vaca Records)

Composer-drummer Benjamin Shorstein, on Knights of the Round Table, utilizes eleven musicians from the Madre Vaca collective to perform a ten-part jazz suite portraying characters and action from the Arthurian tales. Among the featured musicians are pianist Jonah Pierre, guitarist Jarrett Carter, bassist Thomas Milovac, saxophonist Juan Rollan, trumpeter Steve Strawley and trombonist Lance Reed

Greek born with Egyptian roots, electric jazz harpist and composer Maria-Christina Harper is reinventing the sound of the harp in the jazz world.  With her anarchic spirit and an interest in exploring what the harp can do, rather than exploring its traditional sounds, she presents her instrument in new and exciting ways.  Combining her traditional music roots with free jazz she creates an irresistible, compelling sound cosmos. It’s where East meets West. Maria-Christina has gathered two outstanding, highly acclaimed players to form the Harper Trio featuring drummer’s-drummer Evan Jenkins and the dynamic saxophonist Josephine Davies . Together they present Passing By their powerful debut recording.

His 12th Album, , immediately recognizable for its oblique harmonies, unorthodox rhythms, and hairpin turns of melody. His music comes at you in polygons rather than waves. Tritone chords abound.

Bruford “The Sahara of Snow parts 1 & 2” from One of a Kind – Vinyl Re-release (Cherry Red)

The band Bruford recorded this album in 1979 and it went on to achieve critical acclaim and commercial success. The line-up on this album is: Bill Bruford – drums, percussion Allan Holdsworth – electric guitar Dave Stewart – keyboards Jeff Berlin – bass. This 12″ vinyl re-issue has been mastered from the original 1979 mix, taken from the original 1979 analogue tapes, and comes housed in a replica sleeve. The remixing was done by Jakko Jakszyk (the lead singer of the current line-up of King Crimson) and has been approved by Bill Bruford. This definitive vinyl re-release is re-issued on Bruford’s own Winterfold Records and was overseen personally by Bill Bruford.

Pentangle “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” from Reunions – Live & BBC Sessions 1982-2011 (Cherry Red)

Essential 4CD box set presenting exceptional live and BBC session recordings by the reunited original line up of legendary folk rock band Pentangle. The version of Mingus’s classic tune is taken from the band’s final double album, ‘Finale: An Evening With Pentangle’, that includes performances cherry picked from their 2008 UK tour and was first released by Topic Records in 2016. Bert Jansch (guitar),  , John Renbourn (guitar) and Danny Thompson (double bass)  and Terry Cox (drums).
