Aural Delights on the Overflow 157

This week I have new music from Tomistoma, The Silversound, Catalogue, 2 Lost Souls, Robert Forster, Sixty Watt Shaman, Jeff Gburek, Jody and the Jerms, Ryan McGregor, BIG|BRAVE, and The Postman.  In addition there are archive tracks from Dave Graney & The Mistly, and,  Procol Harem

Tomistoma – THE OLD HORRORS (i. “The Eve of the War” – ii. “Frontlines” – iii. “Echoes of Echoes”) – Savagery (EP) : Tomistoma’s 13th release brims with excellent keyboard sounds and prog dynamics. A treat throughout from Cai Brown

The Silversound – The Wolf – The Silversound : Another preview track from the forthcoming debut from the Melbourne super-group. Fuzzed out fun with a Led Zep nod towards the end.

Dave Graney & The MistLY –  Birds ‘N’ Goats – Rock ‘n’ Roll Is Where I Hide : originally on the Coral Snakes “Soft and Sexy Sound” album (1995).

Procol Harum – Homburg – Too Much Sun Will Burn: The British Psychedelic Sounds of 1967 Volume Two : another historical collection from Cherry Red. A Brooker Reid composition from said year – the follow up to A Whiter Shade Of Pale – a superior tune I reckon.

Catalogue – Parallel Lines – Modern Delusion : another track from the Marseilles Post Punk Trio.

2 Lost Souls – Don’t Believe – 52 Singles : Number 16 in the set with a guest appearance on bass from Jon Rowlinson

Robert Forster – The Roads – The Candle And The Flame : a classic RF tune from the new album

Sixty Watt Shaman – Antidote – Weedian : Trip to Maryland: A Tribute to Dave Sherman : from a recent compilation

Jeff Gburek – Improvisation on a Graphic Score – Corduroy Cascade :  Recorded at various locations between 2000 – 2022. Polish based guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Jeff Gburek follows up his wonderful album of solo guitar Vigilance Suite I & II with the abstract multi-textured Corduroy Cascade.  Using the electric guitar as a reference Jeff utilises synthesiser, zither, voice, walkie-talkies, field recordings and even horse shoes on these eight spontaneous compositions.

Jody and the Jerms – Started Something – Oxford outfit JODY AND THE JERMS  have released a new single which is the first taste of their new ‘Wonder’ LP, which is out in April and was produced, mixed and mastered by RIDE’s MARK GARDENER at his OX4 Sound Studio.

Ryan McGregor – The States Time Flow – Through Flood, Through Fire : Another release from the excellent Ramble Records. Recorded between the fall of 2020 and Spring of 2022 at the Ranch in Los Angeles and mom’s place in Ormond Beach.FL respectively. Track titles inspired by writings of Janet Frame. Released February 13, 2023 All music composed, performed, recorded and mixed by Ryan McGregor who plays  Electric and acoustic guitars, effects, penny whistle.

BIG|BRAVE – the ten of swords – nature morte : the elemental ensemble of guitarist/vocalist Robin Wattie, guitarist Mathieu Ball, and drummer Tasy Hudson, harness an earthen heaviness composed of distorted and textural drones, austere bombast, and Wattie’s heart-rending voice.  Touring Europe and the UK in April and May.

The Postman – Cain and Abel – Vagabond Energy Sweets ep :  PETER LLOYD – VOCALS & KAZOO, TOM PASFIELD – BASS, TOBY WARDILL – DRUMS & BACKING VOCALS ,

JONNY HANNAH – GUITAR – The Postmen formed in Tom’s Famous Basement one Friday evening, having just watched Tati’s Jour de Fete, & decided then & there to mix Woody Guthrie with The Pixies, Half man Half Biscuit with Arthur Askey, & favela inspired Sambas with council estate choruses. First class, top tunes, delivered straight from The Postmen’s vernacular sorting office in Darktown… la lutte continue…
