49 Steps To Heaven

After years of touring and recording as a sideman, that has seen him play on forty records, and also the release two of his own very contemporary sounding albums,”Trinité” and “Earthsong”, Lionel Beuvens presents this ambitious new project under the Hypnote Records label. For this project he reunites Alexi Tuomarila (piano), Brice Soniano (double bass) and Kalevi Louhivuori (trumpet), who are joined at times by Ewout Pierreux (fender rhodes) and Franck Vaganee (alto saxophone). This release confirms the richness of his repertoire, underpinned by jazz as well as classical and latin music. The influences of his compositions range from African music to Bach via Radiohead, Steve Coleman, Count Basie and John Coltrane. Playing throughout the album is exemplary and there is sufficient variety to grab and hold this listeners attention. I was particular impressed by Vaganees’ contribution.
