Aural Delights 500

500 seems like a good place to end.

This show has been running since around 2010, it emerged from the remains of a very similar show called Reformation which was originally aired on Salford City Radio. It has travelled around a bit since then but ended up in a good place on Thursday evenings on taintradio.

However it is safe to say that with the exception of a few hard core fans it has not really developed a huge following. In addition of late I have found it increasingly more difficult to find material enough to fill two hours. So this version of Aural Delights retires with this edition.

The one hour Sunday afternoon show on RIver Gibbs FM however does remain in place and that will be the place where I will showcase new non-jazz music.

In this slot next week there will be another World of Jazz Show – yes there will be four hours of new jazz to listen to each week. Over time the Thursday night jazz show will focus on free/improvised music.

Thanks to everyone who contributed music to the Aural Delights show over the last 12 years – and thanks to those of you who took the time out to listen.

So for the final show a selection of favourites, some new things and one or two things that seemed to reflect the content over the years.

NOTES

  • Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Dead Flag Blues (Intro) – F♯ A♯ ∞
  • The Fall – R.O.D. – Bend Sinister
    • It was a bit of a trademark move back in the early days to kick off the show with that selection from GS!YBE and then follow it with a post punk classic – either The Fall or Magazine.
  • Dave Graney & The Lurid Yellow Mist – I Ain’t Natural (Supermodified Remix) – Supermodified
  • Legless Crabs – (I Wanna Be A) Cult Musician – Single?
  • Anthony Moore – War – Flying Doesn’t Help
  • Henry Cow – War – In Praise Of Learning
  • The Fall – War – Singles 1978-2016
    • Dave and Clare have been constants across the Aural Delights Story and I think I’ve now covered most of their back catalogue – they will be standing guests on the Sunday show
    • More from Metal Postcard who send great music but little info – not sure when or where this is from
    • Three variations on War, the Peter Blegvad, Anthony Moore song ….they seem relevant at the moment – the first from Anthony Moore’s 1979 solo album, the second the 1975 Henry Cow Version from in Praise of Learning and finally the Fall’s unique take from the Middle Class Revolt album from 1994 – also on the Singles Box Set
  • The Go Betweens – The House Jack Kerouac Built – Tallulah
  • Agent Starling – Midsommer
  • Rob Snarski And His So-Called Friends – Sweet Edie [featuring Peter Milton Walsh] Searching For The Heart Of It All
  • The Blackeyed Susans – Lover or the Loved – Lover or the Loved
    • Another regular the incomparable Go Betweens
    • Agent Starling released their summer single ‘Midsommer’ on Friday 17th June 2022. Taken from second album, ‘Constellation of Birds’ it features the bands trademark hurdy-gurdy by Quentin Burdworth, other instruments and vocals by Lou Duffy-Howard, and guest violinist Dexter Duffy-Howard. Written and recorded by Agent Starling’s Lou Duffy-Howard and Quentin Budworth the single is a joyful celebration of the summer solstice.
    • Always a delight to get a new Rob Snarski album and even better when it is packed with special guests – on this one the Apartments Peter Milton Walsh . Rob says “I wanted Searching For The Heart Of It All to be more like a playlist, a compilation … like one of those early Tarantino soundtracks where each song is a sonic surprise. To achieve the variety, I had to cast the net far and wide, asking my musician friends and colleagues to contribute not only instrumentally but vocally, hence the extended list of guest singers – Romy Vager (RVG), Gareth Liddiard (TFS), Peter Milton Walsh (The Apartments), Rebecca Barnard (Rebecca’s Empire) and Kelly Day (The Broads). The musicians – my So-Called Friends, include ‘Evil’ Graham Lee [The Triffids], Jack Howard [Hunters and Collectors], Shane Reilly [Lost Ragas], Kiernan Box [Augie March], Shane O’Mara [guitar maestro to many] and rhythm section Ben Wiesner and Rosie Westbrook.
    • …and more Rob the first release from The Blackeyed Susans album ‘Close Your Eyes and See’, out in 2017. Against a backdrop of pulsating rhythms and curling guitar lines, the song explores the dynamics of love. It’s classic Susans, with Rob crooning his way through a Phil Kakulas lyric that asks more questions than it answers
  • 2 Lost Souls – The Bluffer
  • Pete Brown & Piblokto! – Aeroplane Head Woman
  • Dave Graney & The Lurid Yellow Mist – She Looked at Me from out of Her Eyes (Supermodified Remix)
    • The 2 Lost Souls with the second release in the their 52 Singles Club series
    • 1970, Harvest Records – described as prog rock; more rock than prog I reckon – Piblokto!” was formed after Brown’s dismissal from the Battered Ornaments, and was active between 1969 and 1971. All of their releases were for Harvest Records and this was the second album. The band’s name was taken from the Inuit word for “Arctic Hysteria”, Piblokto, with symptoms including hysteria (screaming, uncontrolled wild behaviour), depression and echolalia (senseless repetition of words).
