Lost Tuesday Society

Swansea Folk-pop aficionados ‘Lost Tuesday Society’ have announced a brand new album entitled ‘Bee Skin Rug’ which released independently on Friday 22nd of October.

‘Lights’ the first single to be taken from the ‘Bee Skin Rug’ album is a terrific uplifting burst of energy that works as a fantastic preview of what we can expect from their new works. Harmony flooded and certainly becoming a real automatic-earworm, ‘Lights’ really excels and shows off ‘Lost Tuesday Society’s new material to a T, and accompanied with the production of acclaimed long-time friend and producer Joe Gibb, LTS are kitted out to establish themselves as a tour de force in their respected genres.

‘Lights’ was released on Friday 1st of October.

New Age Steppers

The New Age Steppers were a twisted sort of punk/reggae supergroup organized by On-U Sound label head Adrian Sherwood in the early ’80s. It included vocalists Ari Up (formerly of the Slits) and Mark Stewart as well as Roots Radics drummer Style Scott and a handful of other studio musicians, with Sherwood himself doing that dubwise voodoo that he did so well at the mixing board. The ironically titled “Massive Hits, Vol. 1” draws on the band’s first three releases, taking about half the material from New Age Steppers and Action Battlefield and putting those tracks together with all but two selections from Foundation Steppers to create a generous program and about as good an overview of the group’s formative years as you could ask for.

Calming River

June 4th saw UK alt-folk fingerstyle guitarist & songwriter Calming River (Joshua Malcolm) release his debut album ‘Dead Bluebottles Supine’, a record that blends fingerstyle folk with atmospheric instrumentals. Over recent years, Malcolm has slowly been turning ears, with comparisons drawn to the likes of Nick Drake, Mark Kozelek and Jose Gonzalez. His debut album builds on such influences, whilst driving into a more dystopian soundscape. Fittingly the album title is taken from George Orwell’s ’Road to Wigan Pier’. ’Dead Bluebottles Supine’ is an alt-folk record that comprises delicate, melancholic tracks that together wear away the rock; the paradox of what is soft is strong (Lao Tzu).

The Hill Country Rebel

Texas-raised songwriter Hayden Karchmer, is a purveyor of honesty. He is known for his raw, forthright storytelling, painting a clear portrait of both the highs and glory of his triumphs, and the low-down, hellish reality of loss and desperation. A sound crafted by a wide variety of experiences, taking inspiration from the many places he has called home. A nomad by circumstance, he has hopped between Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, Ohio, Colorado, and New York; finding songs in the stories he has lived.

Bouquet of Dead Crows

Hemispheres, The third full length from Bouquet of Dead Crows welcomes, new bassist Karen Gadd, which balances out the yin and yang within the quartet, and, which also brings a fresh and revitalised feel to the bands sound. The complete collection is called Hemispheres – the title of which describes an album of two parts.

The first part “Celestial” was released last year, the second part “Cerebral” released October 22nd.

This latest chapter in the Bouquet of Dead Crows story finds the quartet adopting a more progressive sound with their trademark riffs with big melodies approach being enhanced to incorporate more layered and nuanced elements, different time signatures and tunings, and more reflective and sometimes ambient sections. The duality of the album title is carried through to the music. Intense hard rocking sections contrast with quieter moments

Richard Carlson Band

Richard Carlson Band’s second single ‘Langham’s Lies’ is taken from their forthcoming debut album ‘Pub Covers’. ‘Langham’s Lies’ continues what Richard Carlson Band started with the lurching mid-tempo menace of their previous release. After moving cities and under going several line- up changes since ‘You Can’t Stop (I Can Feel It)’ Richard Carlson Band’s signature sound and core song writing team of Cadman and Carrick has remained. Their blend of brooding spoken vocals over persistent distorted bass riffs is as unique as ever. ‘Langham’sLies’ has an unsettling droning synth throughout which contrasts the surprisingly catchy ‘I’ve got dead eyes’ refrain.

Nolan Potter

Nolan Potter is putting us home recording freaks to shame. We had a year of global pandemic to lay out our grand ideas and the sum total of most artists “quar-riffs” wouldn’t push the constraints of a normal band practice (gosh, remember those?). Nolan Potter, in the meantime, has quietly painted us a beatific masterpiece that veers from the whimsical to the wigged out, deftly weaving an untamed tapestry of sound all the while archly commenting on the present musician’s predicament – and he did it alone. No drum machine clattering in the background amidst tape hiss and 4 track grime here – this is a fully realized, insanely well played, full on rock record that might even one-up his first LP for us, last years excellent Nightmare Forever. The guys’ got more chops than a beauticians’ college across a wide array of instruments – no small feat, and easily overlooked when you leave the lyric sheet and credits on the dining room table. That the songs travel far, wide, up, down, backwards, and gamely spill out over the 5 minute mark with exceptionally loose interludes and diversions is just another marvel in this carnival of aural delights. It’s a gem of a record and it was out on Castle Face September 24th.

Sarah McQuaid

Born out of the pandemic, The St Buryan Sessions is the sixth solo album by award-winning multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Sarah McQuaid, and is her most powerful and emotive offering yet. The album had its genesis in the spring of 2020, when Sarah’s gigs and tours were cancelled due to COVID-19. Thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign, she was able to finance a live solo recording (sans audience) in the lovely medieval church of St Buryan, not far from her home in rural West Cornwall.

Wednesday’s Child

Wednesday’s Child are a London-based duo for whom convention means very little. Blending together jazz and psychedelic rock, and imbuing it with a true punk spirit, the two-piece are difficult to pigeonhole, and impossible to ignore.

Emily Roberts and Georgia Williams began collaborating during the UKs various lockdowns across 2020 and 2021; out of isolation grew connection, and this journey can be traced through the lyrics and sonic progression found in their debut EP due at the end of October. The EP was recorded in an insular and secluded way, mostly in their own bedrooms, and is both written and produced by themselves. The result? A confident and curious new sound in the form of a five track EP.

Lead single ‘Begin Again’ is the first taste of said EP, and indeed the first ever release for Wednesday’s Child. Four minutes of hypnotic and woozy, esoteric pop, there’s both grandeur and whimsy at play, entwining to create something truly unique.

Steve Hackett

Legendary guitarist Steve Hackett releases his new studio rock album Surrender of Silence on 10th September 2021, via Inside Out Music. The album features 11 new songs as Steve has been working hard through Lockdown and, the first time, has completed two studio albums for release within the same year!

Hot on the heels of his classical-acoustic travelogue Under A Mediterranean Sky, which was released in January and hit Number 2 in the UK Classical Album Chart, Surrender of Silence is a further exploration of Hackett’s love of world music, discovering different sounds, moods and textures to deliver a rock album of extraordinary variety, power and beauty.

As with Under A Mediterranean Sky, Surrender of Silence was also recorded during Lockdown and, again, Hackett has called upon some of his musical friends from across the world to contribute. Hackett’s regular touring band of Roger King (keyboards, programming and orchestral arrangements), Rob Townsend (sax, clarinet), Jonas Reingold (bass), Nad Sylvan (vocals) and Craig Blundell (drums) are supplemented by Phil Ehart and Nick D’Virgilio (drums), the vocal talents of Amanda Lehmann, Durga and Lorelei McBroom, Christine Townsend (violin, viola), Malik Mansurov (tar) and Sodirkhon Ubaidulloev (dutar).

Pas Musique

Brooklyn-based Pas Musique present their full-length album ‘Amateur Radio’. With six new electronic, experimental krautrock-influenced tracks, it will be available on white vinyl and digitally via NYC-based label Alrealon Musique.

Jeanne-Marie Varain, artist and daughter of Jean-Herve Peron of FAUST, collaborates on a cover of ‘It’s a Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl’. This Faust cover, developed in 2019 for the ‘KRAUT! Covered’ compilation curated by WFMU’s DJ Scott Williams.

The ‘Amateur Radio’ LP is mirrored by the same broadcasting term, using the radio frequency spectrum for purposes of non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, self-training, private recreation, radio-sport, contesting, and emergency communication. This album was inspired by the collective’s U.S. tour in 2019 and recorded shortly after at Pas Musique headquarters in Brooklyn and mixed by All Real Sound. The tracks are dense and textured, mixing in field recordings captured during that U.S. tour.

This album follows up ‘The Phoenix’ LP (2019) and ‘Inside the Spectrum’ (2015), the title track of which was released by Wire Magazine for its ‘Wire Tapper’ compilation. 2018’s ‘Composited Reality’ was a collaboration with Rapoon, based on field recordings from the USA, UK and Indonesia.
