NOTES

  • On this weeks show an eclectic mix where all corners of the jazz universe are explored including straight ahead playing, free improvisation, exotic baroque fusion, and romantic music. We visit Australia, South America, the USA, Europe and the UK and travel in time between 1969 and 2021.
  • HOUR ONE
  • Alex Collins_Karl Latham_Ryan Berg “Stella By Starlight” from Together (Dropzonejazz Records)
    • An album emerging from diverse musical and generational backgrounds, “Together” is an inviting release from renowned drummer Karl Latham and fast rising New York area musicians pianist Alex Collins and bassist Ryan Berg. “Together” created from live streaming events, presents spirited explorations with creative soaring solos, stunning introductions and constant interplay.
  • Alexander Hawkins, Evan Parker “Jump Start” from Leaps In Leicester (Clean Feed Records)
    • February 27, 2015, Embrace Arts, Leicester, UK – released 2016
  • Third Ear Band “Fire” from Mosaics The Albums 1969-1972 (Cherry Red)
    • Third Ear Band were unique in their exploration of exotic baroque music fused with experimental rock and jazz. Signing to Blackhill Enterprises in 1969, the quartet opened for many of the legendary Hyde Park free concerts by Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and Blind Faith. This compilation collects their three albums.
    • This track is from the self titled second album
    • GLEN SWEENEY Percussion
    • PAUL MINNS Oboe
    • RICHARD COFF Violin, Viola
    • URSULA SMITH: Cello
    • 1970
  • Tomás Cabado “Arenales 1” from Para las esporas (Isla Desierta Discos)
    • Tomás Cabado is releasing his second album as a leader and his first on Isla Desierta Discos, an independent label releasing jazz and new music from Buenos Aires. Para las esporas combines a fascinating mix of Brazilian, baroque and romantic music in a jazz context. Tomás’s guitar is joined by a trio of winds consisting of Jeanette Nenezian (trumpet), Cecilia Dottore (alto sax) and Manuel Calvo (trombone). The lack of a rhythm section facilitates a more chamber like approach where the arrangements, and the interaction between musicians, and the contrasting sounds of the instruments are given space.
  • Bettina Schroeder And Tony Irving “Shatter Resistant Suite 1” from Shatter Resistant (Linear Obsessional)
    • A fantastic, dynamic release by the duo of multimedia artist Bettina Schroeder on electric ukelele, lap steel and effects and Tony Irving (Cyclone Trio, Ascension) on drums. A fiery and ever shifting collision of ideas and quick thinking, with a sound-world that is parallel to No Wave, whilst being amorphous, fleet of foot and loose limbed. Not easily placed in any one genre cupboard. Recorded with characteristic clarity and punch at Tigersonic’s studio in London, and mastered in Alchemix Studios in Brisbane – this is an aural delight and at just short of an hour in length does not overstay its welcome. Released as a cassette in an orange shell, with full colour artwork by Schroeder and a download with a PDF booklet of notes, biogs and more artwork.

  • Dave Rempis, Elisabeth Harnik, Michael Zerang “Triple Tube I” from Triple Tube (Not Two Records)
