Recorded “subliminally” in December 2003 at the 55 Bar in New York City and found when Berne was cleaning out his studio. Tim Berne’s umpteenth release for 2020 finds the Science Friction band in fine form with a suitably titled “Heavy Mental”, and a near 37 minute version of , I think, the previously unreleased, and rather special, “Deadpan”. A track which kicks off with a pummelling intro from Tom Rainey.

This was always a great band with Craig Taborn and Marc Ducret alongside Tim and Tom, and with the talented Herb Robertson guesting this is something rather special to add to Berne’s vast discography. There are some amazing sounds conjured from the instruments which when coupled with inventive interplay and improvisation makes this a must listen. David Torn has remastered this from a CDr and he’s done a damn fine job.
