NOTES

  • On this weeks show new music from Douglas Olsen, Luke Stewart, Tim Berne & Matt Mitchell, Angel Bat Dawid & The Brotherhood, Ingrid Laubrock with large and small ensembles, QMRPlus, and Dave Douglas.
  • HOUR ONE
  • Douglas Olsen “Tailwind” from 2 Cents (Self Released)
  • New England-based trumpeter Douglas Olsen makes a strong impression with his exciting straight ahead self released album 2 Cents. The bop and Latin jazz-oriented set with top local players is filled with stirring originals plus a heated revival of Dizzy Gillespie’s “Algo Bueno.” which I am playing later in the show.
  • The Line-Up Is Douglas Olsen – trumpet and flugelhorn, Dino Govoni – tenor and alto sax, Angel Subero – trombone and guiro, Yaure Muniz – trumpet, Tucker Antell – tenor sax, Tim Ray – piano, Dave Zinno – bass, Mark Walker – drums, Ernesto Diaz – congas
  • Luke Stewart “Awakening The Masters” from Luke Stewart Exposure Quintet (Astral Spirits)
  • Luke Stewart – Bass, Compositions
  • Edward Wilkerson, Jr. – Reeds
  • Ken Vandermark – Reeds
  • Jim Baker – Piano
  • Avreeayl Ra – Drums
  • A band put together by Dave Rempis as part of the Exposure Series at Elastic Arts in Chicago in 2018. The same band got together later that year as part of Option Series at Experimental Sound Studio with Ken Vandermark. The music on the album comes from both of those sessions.
  • Tim Berne, Mat Mitchell “Icreminced” from Spiders (Out Of Your Head Records)
  • OOYH Untamed is a new digital-only DIY side of Out Of Your Head Records. The focus of Untamed is to release high quality performances with a quicker turnaround than a traditional studio album. They may be a live performance or a home studio recording, and while the first round of releases leaned towards lo-fi, Spiders is certainly of a higher and more refined recording quality. In the time of COVID-19 all proceeds from Untamed album sales are given directly to the artists.
  • For every sale of this album OOYH Records will donate an additional $1 to the Equal Justice Initiative (eji.org)
  • Angel Bat Dawid & Tha Brothahood “London” from LIVE (International Anthem)
  • LIVE was mostly recorded on November 1st, 2019, at Haus der Berliner Festspiele in Berlin, Germany, during the 2019 edition of JazzFest Berlin. For Angel Bat Dawid and her band Tha Brothahood – which includes Deacon Otis Cooke, Viktor Le Givens, Xristian Espinoza, Norman W. Long, Dr. Adam Zanolini, and Asher Simiso Gamedze – it was the first stop of their first European tour. Thanks to Bob Stow for bringing this album to my attention.
  • Ingrid Laubrock with EOS Chamber Orchestra “Dreamt Twice” from Dreamt Twice, Twice Dreamt (Intakt)
  • The album Dreamt Twice, Twice Dreamt follows Ingrid Laubrock’s landmark orchestral album Contemporary Chaos Practices from 2018 (Intakt CD 314). Ingrid Laubrock presents on this double album five compositions in double version. On the first CD, the EOS Chamber Orchestra Cologne interprets Laubrock’s compositions. The soloists are Cory Smythe (piano), Sam Pluta (electronics), Robert Landfermann (bass), Tom Rainey (drums) and Ingrid Laubrock (saxophone). On a second CD of the double album a filigree ensemble around the core trio of Ingrid Laubrock, Cory Smythe, Sam Pluta and the guests Adam Matlock, Josh Modney and Zeena Parkins play the same five compositions
  • QMRPlus “Pt.1” from Uhzoid EP (ears&eyes)
  • In January of 2006, coming off a devastating year following the destruction of their home town, New Orleans, and the fallout and aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the members of QMRplus decided to reconvene in Chicago to record the studio album they had yet to make. Finding a supportive community and creative inspiration inside the multidisciplinary art space and DIY venue known as the Ice Factory (founded and operated by some of Kirchner’s friends from Oak Park, IL), the band set up shop and proceeded to record hours of original compositions and free-form explorations over the course of several days.
  • Quin Kirchner – Drums, Percussion, Tapes
  • Matthew Golombisky – Bass, Effects
  • Robin Boudreaux – Saxophones, Piano, Percussion, Additional Processing
  • Matthew McClimon – Vibraphone
  • Douglas Olsen “2 Cents” from 2 Cents (Self Released)
  • HOUR TWO
  • Luke Stewart “The Scene” from Luke Stewart Exposure Quintet (Astral Spirits)
  • Tim Berne, Mat Mitchell “The Rose Charade” from Spiders (Out Of Your Head Records)
  • Dave Douglas “Perspective” from Overcome (Greenleaf)
  • With musicians stuck at home, musicians are learning to be creative using the technology in front of them. Trumpeter Dave Douglas and trombonist Ryan Keberle put together a project that was upended by the pandemic, but they pushed through and pivoted to remote recording, gathering a unique group of players: vocalist Fay Victor, vocalist and guitarist Camile Meza, bassist Jorge Roeder, and drummer Rudy Royston. Recording from their homes in various parts of New York state, the ensemble put together a beautiful musical statement for our times.
  • The result is a six song album that is being released by Greenleaf Music in digital format exclusively on Bandcamp.
  • Ingrid Laubrock Small Ensemble with Cory Smythe and Sam Pluta “Twice Dreamt” Dreamt Twice, Twice Dreamt (Intakt)
  • Douglas Olsen “Algo Bueno” from 2 Cents (Self Released)
  • QMRPlus “Pt2 ” from Unzoid EP (ears&eyes)
