This week a selection of new albums including material from Stephen Gauci’s gaucimusic imprint, a first look at a new electric album celebrating the music of John Coltrane, new music from Rebecca Hennessey, and two great new releases from the ears&eyes label.

  • HOUR ONE
  • Hans Tammen, Jeremy Carlstedt, Stephen Gauci “#1” from Studio Sessions Vol. 11 (gaucimusic)
    • This rough and tumble outing by comrades Gauci, Tammen, and Carlstedt comes about as a result of Brooklyn’s musical cauldron known as the “Bushwick Series”. Three improvising musicians, each performing with different bands on the same night, digging each other’s music..”I sure could use some of THAT weirdness up in my stuff..”. And so it begins, a match made in Bushwick. Buckle up!

  • Stephen Gauci, Adam Lane, Kevin Shea “#1” from Studio Sessions Vol. 9 (gaucimusic)
    • Recorded just weeks before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down New York City and the Bushwick Public House, this album represents the culmination of three years of weekly performances by the 8pm Bushwick Series “house band”, and the end of an era. So this recording is both a farewell, a celebration of what was… and a call to action. We’ll see you all on the other side! – Stephen Gauci
  • QMR Plus “Pt.4” from Uhzoid EP (ears&eyes)
    • In January of 2006, coming off a devastating year following the destruction of their home town, New Orleans, and the fallout and aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the members of QMRplus decided to reconvene in Chicago to record the studio album they had yet to make. Finding a supportive community and creative inspiration inside the multidisciplinary art space and DIY venue known as the Ice Factory (founded and operated by some of Kirchner’s friends from Oak Park, IL), the band set up shop and proceeded to record hours of original compositions and free-form explorations over the course of several days.
    • Quin Kirchner – Drums, Percussion, Tapes
    • Matthew Golombisky – Bass, Effects
    • Robin Boudreaux – Saxophones, Piano, Percussion, Additional Processing
    • Matthew McClimon – Vibraphone

    • All proceeds from the sales of this recording will go to Assata’s Daughters (www.assatasdaughters.org), “a Black woman-led, young person-directed organization rooted in the Black Radical Tradition which organizes young Black people in Chicago by providing them with political education, leadership development, mentorship, and revolutionary services. Through their programs they aim to Deepen, Escalate, and Sustain the Movement for Black Liberation.”

    • Tom Rainey: drums
    • Ken Vandermark: reeds

  • HOUR TWO
  • Tony Koch and the AltNews Band “Q” from Groove Rangers (Self Released)
    • The AltNews Band brings together elements of neo bop, retro funk, nu jazz, chill and Latin music with unexpected instrumental solos, richly layered synth sounds, hip rhythms and bluesy, funky guitar hooks. Started by guitarist, composer and jazz visionary Tony Koch (Kosh), the quintet is filled out by producer, engineer and bass player Miles Hill, drummer Bobby Ruggiero, saxophonist Campbell Ryga and renowned Vancouver multi-instrumentalist Miles Black.
  • Jason Stein & Adam Shead “Endurance” from Synaptic Atlas (ears&eyes)
  • QMR Plus “Pt.5” from Uhzoid EP (ears&eyes)
  • Stephen Gauci, Santiago Leibson, Shawn Lovato, Colin Hinton “#2” from Live at Scholes Street Studio (gaucimusic)
    • This is both our first performance, and recording. A maiden voyage of sorts. I was offered a set at Brooklyn’s Scholes Street Studio, and put this quartet together on short notice. Having heard Santiago, Colin, and Shawn many times (in various ensembles) at the “Bushwick Series”, and having performed with each separately in duet situations, I knew it would be a smokin’ set with these cats pushing the music.. But WOW
  • Rebecca Hennessey “Nothing Passes For Favour” from All the Little Things You Do (Self Released)
  • Jason Stein & Adam Shead “Capitulation” from Synaptic Atlas (ears&eyes)
  • QMR Plus “Pt.6” from Uhzoid EP (ears&eyes)
  • Don Paul “Love Is The Main Flame” from The Time We Have, Meld 1 (Self Released)
    • from six albums recorded between 1989 and 2018 in San Francisco and New Orleans
    • Proceeds benefit Sticking Up For Children. path-making enterprise of ‘SCHOOL EVERYWHERE’ at stickingupforchildren.com. These people are recording Lessons from a 243-page textbook, Mon Livre Unique, to bring the means for universal literacy to Haiti through mobile devices.
  • Vijay Anderson Trio “#2” from Studio Sessions Vol. 10 (gaucimusic)
    • Drummer Vijay Anderson, currently living/performing in Brooklyn, but hailing from California, leads this trio recording featuring clarinetist Ben Goldberg and bassist Adam Lane. Having worked separately with Goldberg and Lane (on the West Coast) since the early 2000’s, the three came together for this recording in NYC summer 2019. Three improvisational masters, traversing two coasts and decades, culminating in this extraordinary work of art. Enjoy!
