  • Neil Swainson Quintet, Joe Henderson & Woody Shaw “49th Parallel” from 49th Parallel (Real to Reel)
  • Initially released on CD by Concord Records in 1988, Swainson’s only album, 49th Parallel is extremely rare and heavily sought after. This year, it made its vinyl debut with a limited edition pressing for Record Store Day Canada. The recording features a quintet with jazz legends Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, trumpeter Woody Shaw, drummer Jerry Fuller and Gary Williamson on piano. (As it turned out, the album was Shaw’s last studio session.) The CD (released May 8) contains one bonus track, “Labyrinth,” not included on the original release

  • Another 2020 release for trumpeter alex massa, Strange Winds is an improvised chamber ensemble, composed of horn players living in chicago. not only does this recording feature many great musicians and friends, but it also represents the beautiful, and often dark, themes and ideas that tie the city’s musicians together. the arts community is strong, resilient, and knows how to improvise when given very little.

  • Originally formed in 2013 in Brisbane, the Cyclone Trio is Massimo Magee tenor and Tony Irving drums, whose “Vitriol & The Third Oraculum” (577 Records, 2020) was warmly received earlier this year, with the addition of Tim Green also on drums. In what was incidentally the last gig at London’s Cafe Oto before the Covid-19 lockdown, and the group’s second-ever show.
